Promotes education and action for a better democracy by:
LWV Mpls is a member-driven non-partisan organization. Members determine what issues will be studied, re-studied, or reviewed. Members bring topics of interest to a Program Planning Session, usually held in January. It is at this meeting that direction begins to take shape for the following year's work. Topics to be studied in depth must be approved and forwarded to the annual City Convention by the Board of Directors.
This process elicits lively discussion and an opportunity to leverage action on passionate convictions held by members. Studies of issues sometimes take up to three years to be completed, at which time members, after studying the materials and discussing them, answer consensus questions.
The responses to the questions are tallied and form the basis for positions upon which the League acts and informs. If a majority of members do not agree on a particular point, the League does not form a position from which to act on the issue.
At times, informational programs on topics where consensus is not expected are discussed in the Voter newsletter and at unit meetings or public forums. These may lead to full-blown studies where consensus is reached on issues. The League does not lobby or act on issues when it does not have a consensus position.
