In 2005 and 2006, the City Government Structure Committee of
the Minneapolis League produced studies. The 2005 study, titled Minneapolis Government: A Balancing Act, looked at the overall structure of governance in
Minneapolis.The 2006 study, Minneapolis
Government: A Balancing Act II, examined
Minneapolis’s independent boards in greater detail.
Since then the Committee has been monitoring the work of the
Charter Commission and other bodies concerned with government reform in
Minneapolis in order to support adoption of League positions arising from these
two studies and previous League efforts. Our brief positions on local government can be found at: http://www.lwvmpls.org/City_Government.html
At present the Committee is waiting with interest for the
recommendations of an ad hoc working
group, comprising several former elected and appointed City officials as well
as other community leaders, that is examining options for increasing City
government accountability and effectiveness. This working group was formed in response to unsuccessful
charter revision attempts in 2009 and has been greatly influenced by the
League’s 2005 and 2006 studies.
The City Government Structure Committee is always interested
in having new members.If you’d
like to join - or simply get more information about the Committee’s work - let
the office know or contact Committee Chair, Joan Niemiec.
